Pedro Tea Estate sits on a hillside just outside Nuwara Eliya town and has been producing tea since 1885. It is one of the most visited tea estates in the hill country and one of the best places on the island to understand how tea actually gets from a bush to a cup. The factory tour is detailed, unhurried, and run by people who genuinely know the process. The plantation walk that follows it, through rows of tea bushes with the town spread below and the hills behind, is one of those quiet experiences that tends to stay with people long after the trip is over.

I have brought guests here more times than I can count. This is everything you need to know before you go.

The Factory Tour: What Happens Inside

🏭

Pedro Tea Factory

Est. 1885 • Full process tour • Morning visits recommended

The Pedro factory tour walks you through the full tea production process from the moment fresh leaf arrives from the estate. It is a working factory, not a museum, which means on a morning visit you will see and smell each stage in operation. A guide from the estate leads the tour and explains each step in plain language.

01

Withering

Fresh leaf arrives from the estate and is spread on long wire mesh troughs where air is blown through it for 16 to 18 hours. This removes most of the moisture from the leaf, making it soft enough to roll without breaking. The withering room has a particular warm, grassy smell that is unlike anything else.

02

Rolling

The withered leaf is fed into rolling machines that twist and break the cell walls, releasing the natural oils and enzymes. This is the step that starts the chemical reactions that give tea its flavour and colour. At Pedro you can see the rollers in operation and the change in the leaf as it comes through.

03

Oxidation (Fermentation)

The rolled leaf is spread on tables in a cool, humid room and left to oxidise for one to three hours. This is when the leaf turns from green to the copper and brown colours associated with black tea. The oxidation room smells intensely of the developing tea character and is one of the most memorable parts of the tour.

04

Drying (Firing)

The oxidised leaf passes through large hot-air dryers that stop the oxidation and reduce moisture to around two percent. This locks in the flavour developed during oxidation and gives the tea its shelf life. The dried leaf comes out black, crisp, and with the characteristic smell of finished tea.

05

Sorting and Grading

The dried tea is run through a series of mechanical sieves and sorters that separate it by particle size into different grades, from whole leaf down to fannings and dust. Nuwara Eliya teas from Pedro are graded and packed here on site before being sent to the Colombo tea auctions.

06

Tea Tasting

The tour ends in the tasting room where you try freshly brewed Pedro tea in the traditional way: strong, in white cups, assessed by appearance, aroma, and taste. This is how professional tea tasters evaluate every batch before it goes to auction. It is a straightforward and genuinely interesting end to the tour.

The Plantation Walk

🏞

Estate Walk Through the Tea Bushes

30 to 45 minutes • Easy walking • Best in the morning

After the factory tour, a walk through the plantation itself is the other reason to spend time at Pedro rather than simply driving past. The estate is laid out across a hillside at around 1,800 metres with the town of Nuwara Eliya visible below and the hills of the central highlands stretching behind. The rows of tea bushes are maintained at waist height for picking, and walking between them in the morning with mist still in the lower valleys is one of those quietly beautiful experiences that does not show up in any photograph quite the way it feels in person.

If the timing is right you will see tea pickers at work, moving through the rows and plucking the top two leaves and a bud that make up the standard harvest. The picking is done by hand, almost entirely by Tamil women from the estate community who have often worked on the same plantation for many years. Your estate guide can introduce you if you ask.

🌿 Good to know: The plantation walk is informal and self-guided after the factory tour. Ask your estate guide to point you in the direction of the active picking areas if you want to see the harvest in progress. Picking happens in the mornings and is not always visible in the afternoon.

Pedro vs Mackwoods Labookellie: Which to Visit

Both Pedro and Mackwoods Labookellie on the Kandy road are commonly visited tea estates near Nuwara Eliya. They are genuinely different experiences and which one suits you depends on what you want from the stop.

🌿

Pedro Tea Estate

  • Closer to Nuwara Eliya town centre (3 km)
  • More atmospheric and less commercial
  • Smaller estate with a more personal tour
  • Better for seeing the full factory process up close
  • The plantation walk has excellent views over the town
  • Best if you are already in Nuwara Eliya

Mackwoods Labookellie

  • On the main A5 Kandy road, easier to stop en route
  • Larger and more established tourist operation
  • Well-known tea room with estate views
  • More infrastructure but more crowded
  • Better if arriving from or departing towards Kandy
  • Good if you want a tea room experience with less walking
💡 My recommendation: If you have time for only one, Pedro is better for the factory experience and the atmosphere. Labookellie is better if you want a comfortable tea room stop on the drive between Kandy and Nuwara Eliya. If you have a morning to spare, Pedro is worth making a dedicated stop for.

How to Include Pedro in Your Highland Itinerary

Pedro Tea Estate fits naturally into a Nuwara Eliya stop on a private highland tour. The most common itinerary sequences that include it are:

🏔

Kandy to Nuwara Eliya

Arrive from Kandy via the scenic A5 road. Stop at Labookellie on the way for tea and a view, then visit Pedro the following morning when the factory is in full operation. Continue to Ella from Nuwara Eliya via Horton Plains if timing allows.

🌵

Nuwara Eliya Morning Activity

Use Pedro as the morning activity on your full day in Nuwara Eliya. Visit the estate between 8 and 10 AM for the factory tour and plantation walk, then spend the afternoon at Gregory Lake or in town before dinner.

🚗

On the Way from Nuwara Eliya to Ella

If departing Nuwara Eliya in the morning towards Ella, stop at Pedro before leaving town. The factory is active early and the visit takes under two hours, leaving you comfortably on the road to Ella by midday.

Most tourists drive past tea estates in Sri Lanka without stopping. The ones who go inside almost always say it was one of the most interesting things they did on the trip. Pedro is the right estate for that kind of visit: small enough to feel personal, working hard enough to feel real, and set in a landscape that rewards you for making the detour.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, particularly if you are interested in how tea is made. Pedro offers a genuine working factory tour that covers the full production process from fresh leaf to finished tea. The plantation walk afterwards is beautiful, especially in the morning. It is one of the better estate visits in the Nuwara Eliya area and less commercial than some of the more heavily marketed estates on the main tourist routes.

Morning visits between 8 AM and 11 AM are best. The factory is in full operation in the morning and you will be able to see all stages of production running simultaneously. Afternoon visits are quieter and some machinery may be idle. The plantation walk is also best in the morning when light is soft and tea pickers are typically still at work in the estate.

Pedro Tea Estate is about 3 kilometres from Nuwara Eliya town centre. It is a short tuk-tuk or car ride, taking about 10 minutes. The estate is on the Badulla Road and is signposted. If you are on a private tour, your driver guide will take you directly there as part of the itinerary.

Pedro produces high-grown Nuwara Eliya Ceylon black tea. At around 1,800 metres altitude, the cool temperatures and distinct seasons produce a tea that is lighter in colour and more delicate and floral in flavour than mid-grown or low-grown Ceylon teas. Nuwara Eliya teas are considered some of the finest Ceylon teas and are sought after by tea connoisseurs worldwide.

Yes. The estate provides its own guide for the factory tour as part of the entrance fee. You do not need an external guide to visit Pedro. However, visiting as part of a private tour with a driver guide means the visit is arranged in advance, fits seamlessly into your day's schedule, and your guide can provide context about the history of tea in Sri Lanka and the Nuwara Eliya region.

Yes. Pedro tea is available to purchase at the estate shop after the tour. Buying directly from the estate is the best way to get genuinely fresh Nuwara Eliya high-grown tea at a fair price. It also makes a good gift to take home, as Nuwara Eliya tea from a specific estate is considerably more interesting than generic supermarket Ceylon tea.
