Here is what the day actually looks like when people try it, and the better alternative that takes one extra night and transforms both experiences.

- Day 2: Udawalawe morning safari (6:00 AM start). Drive to Yala area after safari (2 hrs). Check in.
- Day 3: Yala morning safari. Optional afternoon safari. Continue to south coast beach or Colombo.
This is the route we recommend most. You see both parks at their best without rushing either one.
South Coast to Yala to Udawalawe
2 to 3 nights- Day 1: Drive from Mirissa or Tangalle to Yala area. Check in near the park.
- Day 2: Yala morning and afternoon safaris. Two safaris significantly improves leopard sighting odds.
- Day 3: Drive from Yala to Udawalawe (2 hrs). Udawalawe morning safari. Continue to Ella or Colombo.
Best if you are starting from the south coast and heading toward the hill country after.
Combined Day (Only If You Must)
1 day- Start very early at Udawalawe (6:00 AM gate). Do a shortened 2.5 hour safari.
- Drive to Yala (2 to 2.5 hours). Arrive late morning.
- Take afternoon safari at Yala (lower sighting rates than morning but possible).
- Accept that you are doing both parks at half quality rather than either at full quality.
Only worth doing if you have a single day for both and no flexibility to extend. Udawalawe in the morning is the better half of this day.

If coming from the hill country (Ella), visit Udawalawe first as it is closer and on the way. If coming from the south coast (Mirissa), visit Yala first and Udawalawe on the way back toward Colombo or the hill country. Follow the logical direction of your overall route.
Two nights minimum. Ideally three: two nights near Yala for two or three safaris, then one night near Udawalawe for a morning safari before continuing. This gives you the full experience at both parks without rushing either one.
The most popular and most logical is Ella to Udawalawe (morning safari) to Yala (afternoon drive, morning safari next day) to south coast beach. This route flows naturally without backtracking and gives you both parks at their best.
