Mirissa: The Livelier South Coast Alternative

Mirissa is a curved bay on the south coast with a completely different energy to Bentota. The beach is beautiful, a crescent of sand with coconut palms leaning over the water, but the sea here has more power. There can be strong surf, particularly outside of peak season, and swimming is not always as straightforward as at Bentota. That said, on a calm day in January or February with the sea flat and the light good, it is one of the most visually striking beaches in the country.
The reason most couples visit Mirissa is whale watching. Blue whales and sperm whales are reliably spotted off the coast here from November to April, and the boat trips leave early in the morning from the harbour. It is a genuinely extraordinary experience. Watching a blue whale surface a few hundred metres from a small boat is not something either of you will forget. If whale watching is something you want to do on your honeymoon, Mirissa is the base for it.
The town has more going on than Bentota. There is a strip of beach restaurants and cafes, fresh seafood every night, and a social atmosphere. It is more popular with younger travellers and has a backpacker presence, which is fine in context but means it does not have quite the romantic seclusion of Bentota. The accommodation here runs more towards boutique guesthouses and small hotels than heritage resorts.

The honest answer to which is better for a honeymoon is: it depends what you want from a beach stop. If you want to be pampered and left alone, Bentota. If you want whale watching and a bit more going on, Mirissa. If you have the time, both. They are different enough to be worth it.
Can You Visit Both on the Same Trip?
Yes, and this is what I suggest for most honeymoon couples who have ten days or more. Bentota sits on the west coast about 90 minutes south of Colombo. Mirissa is on the south coast, about three hours further. The two are connected by road and make a natural sequence: start at Bentota at the beginning of the beach section of the trip, then drive south to Mirissa for the second stop.
A typical honeymoon itinerary that includes both might look like this: three nights in Bentota (arrive from Kandy or Nuwara Eliya via the coastal road), then three nights in Mirissa (whale watching on one morning, beach and food the rest). From Mirissa you can drive on to Tangalle for a quieter final beach stop, or head up to Yala National Park.
Doing both in sequence means you do not have to choose. You get the calm lagoon and the luxury hotel in Bentota, and the whale watching and the curved bay in Mirissa. Two or three nights at each is enough to properly settle in at both.
Nights 1 to 3: Bentota
Arrive from Kandy or Nuwara Eliya. Settle in, beach and lagoon, romantic dinners, turtle hatchery visit in the evening.
Nights 4 to 6: Mirissa
Drive south along the coast road. Whale watching on the first morning (early start). Beach, seafood, sunset views for the remaining days.
Night 7 onwards: Tangalle or Yala
Continue east to Tangalle for a wild, quieter beach stop, or head inland to Yala National Park for a safari before flying home.
When to Visit Each Beach
Bentota
Best: November to April
The west coast of Sri Lanka has its dry season from November to April, when Bentota is at its calmest and most beautiful. The sea is flat, the sky is clear, and the lagoon is perfect. May to October brings the south-west monsoon to the west coast, the beach is still there but rain is more frequent and the sea rougher.
Mirissa
Best: November to April (whale watching peak: Jan to Mar)
Mirissa on the south coast also has its best weather from November to April, when the sea is calmer and whale watching trips run reliably. January to March is the peak window for blue whale sightings. Outside of this window the south coast gets the south-west monsoon from May onwards and whale watching stops.

Tangalle, a quieter beach further east on the south coast, is worth considering for couples who want genuine seclusion without a resort feel.
