Kandy Esala Perahera

The kandy esala perahera is a festival held in July and August in kandy, Sri Lanka. This historical procession is held annually to pay homage to the sacred tooth relic of loard Buddha in sri dalada maligawa in Kandy. Even from the lifetime of the buddha in the 6th century BC, the esala festival was held to commemorate the buddha’s conception, his renunciation and the first sermon. This festival consist of traditional local dancers, wrip crackers, parade of musicians, singers, acrobats, and various other performances accompanied by a large number of comparisoned tuskers and elephants parading the street in celebration of a religious event.

Vesak Festival

Vesak is a religious and cultural festival in sri lanka. Buddhists are celebrating vesak festival because of 3 reasons. The first reason is birth of Siddhartha gautama in Lumbini in Nepal. Second reason was Siddhartha gautam’s supreme attainment as the buddha , the Enlightened one. The third reason is loard buddha’s parinibbana over 2500 years ago at kusinagar. Vesak is celebrated on the day of full moon in the month of mau. Sri Lanka and many asian countries such as india, japan, Singapore, and Taiwan celebrate vesak. Many religious activities are organized during this period in Sri Lanka such as sil campaigns, bodhi poojas, dansals ( freely giving foods, coffee, tea from people ) , vesak devotional songs( bakti gee) , pandols (thoran) and lanterns. And also in this period you can see many more vesak decorations everywhere in the country. In this period night time is very attractive.

Duruthu Perahera

Duruthu festival is one of the most greatest and most glorious cultural traditional festivals in sri Lanka. Duruthu perahera is celebrating to commemorate gautam buddha’s first visit to the country 2500 years ago. This festival is with 3days long festivities at Kelaniya Rajamaha Viharaya. Kelaniya rajamaha viharaya is the most sacred temple in the western province of Sri Lanka since Loard Buddha’s sojourn here during his 3rd historic visit to Sri Lanka.
Duruthu perahera celebrating anually and also supports and revives Sri Lanka’s cultural traditions of dancers, drummers, singers, caparisoned elephants and colourful parades, which have always made this culminating perahera a night of all nights.

Poson Festival

Poson festival is celebrated the arrival of buddhism in sri lanka. Poson is the most important full moon poya day for buddhist in sri lanka. The day monks the introduction of buddhism to the island by Arahant Mahinda in the third century BC. Poson is celebrated throughout the island , with the most important buddhist holiday of the year, being surpassed in importance by vesak. Most of buddhist people are giving dansals ( giving freely food, coffee , tea etc) and arrange trips on poson festival and many more buddhist people arrange trips on poson festival. The major ceremonies are to be found in Anuradhapura and Mihintale. Long lines of devotees dressed in white climb the many steps to the Mihintale hill first to the temple and then to the dagobas that lie adorn the nearby hillrocks.
